The incomparable Baron's Hall,
built in 1341, is one of the most
romantic backdrops imaginable
for a truly memorable wedding
ceremony or reception.

The 60ft high roof, the Minstrel's
Gallery and the massive 15th century
trestle tables flanking the ancient hall
bear witness to many important events
in history. The hall is atmospherically lit by
four impressive candelabra, creating
an air of timeless quality.

Up until the end of the 15th century, the Baron's Hall would at all times have been a mass of people. It was the focal point of the medieval manor, where those who worked it lived out their lives, eating, sleeping and ending their days there. In the centre of the floor, which was originally earth strewn with rushes, is a unique octagonal hearth - the only form of heating in the hall. The smoke from the fire would have risen up to the great chestnut-beamed roof to escape through a smoke louvre.

The Sunderland Room is the original 14th century Solar of the medieval hall. As its name implies, there is a light but mellow atmosphere, enhanced by a roaring log fire in winter. Part panelled and part sandstone walls, this room is furnished with paintings and antiques with large mullioned windows overlooking the magnificent formal gardens.

The Buttery, once the bottle storeroom of the medieval household, is adjacent to the Baron's Hall. Its rich sandstone walls hung with 17th century tapestries create a warm cosy intimacy for smaller occasions.
